Lake Coleridge - Methven Mt Hutt Guide NZ

Lakes & Rivers

The Methven area is surrounded by pristine high country lakes and braided rivers.

The Rakaia & Rangitata rivers provide a playground for locals and visitors; from jetboating and white water rafting, to fishing – as well as contributing to local irrigation and power schemes.

The numerous high country lakes in Methven’s backyard provide an abundance of wildlife, some great fishing spots, and are surrounded by walking and mountain biking tracks. Lake Emma, accessible by 4WD, offers excellent fishing. Lake Camp is popular with boaties, water skiers and fishermen and Lake Clearwater, with its small village of holiday homes, is popular for windsurfing, sailing, rowing and fishing. The Maori Lakes and Lake Heron also offer good fishing and are important wildlife refuges. Lake Coleridge, the site of one of the country’s earliest hydroelectric schemes, supports one of very few New Zealand populations of landlocked Chinook salmon.
