The sun was out in full force on Sunday for the annual Pool Carnival and the 2nd running of the Corporate Race. The BBQ was cranking and the anticipation was mounting with some very competitive ‘talking up’ going on between Mt Hutt Ski Field and the Methven Pubs…..could Mt Hutt repeat last years win or did the pubs have some secret weapon this year?! We would have to wait half an hour to find out, firstly the younger children got to participate in some fun water games, run by some of our senior squad and junior lifeguards. These teenagers are a great help throughout the season and to see them helping and encouraging the youngest children in their swimming and water skills is a credit to them, thank you very much – Isabella Seque, Monique Johnson and Lauren Pluck. The younger children enjoyed their width races and activities and all the prizes.
By then the anticipation was growing and it was time for the Corporate race. Our first heat was between Primo, Young Guns (Junior Lifeguards/squad), SuperValue and Topnotch. The dedication of the SuperValue staff swimming in their uniforms was admired by many. Topnotch managed a couple of fast ring-ins and Primo had gone all out on international super stars.
This heat was perhaps described as a race of two halves with Primo and the pool Young Guns fighting it out for first place with the Young Guns taking it out in a time of 1:20:43 followed by Primo in a time of 1:21:69. Meanwhile the two local supermarkets were fiercely fighting it out for bragging rights as it came down to the last swimmers of John Eddington and Samuel McDonald…… and fight they did, it was neck and neck the length of the pool with John taking it out by .06 of a second from Samuel. Their times -Topnotch 1:37:72 SuperValue 1: 37:78, well done to all 4 teams.
The second heat involved the much anticipated rematch between Mt Hutt and Methven Pubs, a new comer team from the local Methven Preschool and our team of volunteer Fire fighters + a wife. The challenge had been laid down by Mt Hutt’s coach Fish and the Methven Pub team accepted and showed that there may have been some secret training going on, taking out this heat with a time of 1:17:06 from Mt Hutt on 1:19:09 followed by our fire fighters on 1:28:62 and Methven Preschool on 1:29:53.
The five fastest qualifiers went through to the final so Methven Pubs, Mt Hutt, Young Guns, Primo and Fire Brigade. Mt Hutt was still confident that they had what they needed for back to back titles having saved some for the final. After a false start we were ready for THE RACE! And what a race it was, from the start we had a 3 way tie with Mt Hutt, The Young Guns and Methven Pubs fighting it out! Going into the third length it was down to Mt Hutt and The Young Guns but Jan Lukasek flew through the water to catch these two teams so going into the fourth and final length it was neck and neck the whole length of the pool!! If you weren’t there you may have heard the screaming and cheering it came
down to who had the longest arms and touched first….
