This comprehensive online presence for the Methven area, is an incredible resource. Providing information on everything in our community from local events, accommodation, food outlets, clubs and societies, local activities and jobs.
The Methven Mt Hutt Guide was built by and is maintained by Michelle Bungard, and she explains how it came about. “When the Amazing Space website, which was supported by and contributed to by many people and tourist based organsiations closed down, it left a huge gap. Discussions lead to the idea that a mobile responsive site could be developed that reflected our whole community, not just the tourism industry, and I volunteered to take on the project, and have spent the last 12 months building the site into what it is today.”
When asked why, when it was such a huge undertaking for one person, Michelle said, “For no other reason than I care about the community, it’s where we live, where our children go to school and where we have our businesses. The website is starting to become a great resource for the community and for those that are planning on visiting here.”
Building the site was only the first stage, developing new content and updating existing content is ongoing and on top of that part of Michelle’s job is spent optimising the website so it ranks high with all the major search engines. She said, “For a new website the content and product listings are well placed but it takes work; it’s a bit of a science, understanding how Google picks up your information, things like page structure, content, meta tags and linking keywords all play a part.” All product listings are in the process of being upgraded already, providing more room for imagery and business descriptions, along with a few behind the scenes enhancements to further optimise the listings.
For a small or start up business/organisation, building and maintaining a website can be a huge expense and without expert knowledge, your beautiful website could languish in the depths of the World Wide Web, never to be seen anyway.
Methven Mt Hutt Guide’s annual listing subscription provides you with your own mini website and includes a location map, contact details, opening hours, photos and information.
“It is ideal until you can grow your business enough to support your own website. She explained, “Quite a few people have purchased a domain name for their business or organisation, costing around $27 a year, and then have redirected the domain name to their listing on the Methven Mt Hutt Guide, allowing them to display a website address on their business cards and marketing collateral. For an additional $59 a year unlimited email mailboxes can also be purchased which is great for clubs and organisations where personnel change regularly, and for those that want to set up a few generic email addresses so that personal email addresses aren’t given out and having to be updated on a regular basis.”
Non-Profit, clubs, community news, AGMs, jobs and events are all posted for free, local businesses can subscribe for only $100 (+GST) per annum.
Currently, Michelle’s focus is on developing a strong Trades and Services section, “You see on Facebook all the time, requests for information about local tradespeople, telephone numbers for shops and takeaways; this section is intended to be a local phonebook. Just look it up on the site and the information will be there.”
