Methven Racecourse played host to the inaugural Methven High Country Fete on Wednesday 23rd November.
Vendors from all over the South Island travelled to our wee town to bring us a huge range of stalls, there really was something for everyone.
Event co-organiser Denise Dixey said, “We were astounded by the interest, we would have been more than happy with 50 stalls for our first year but ended up with 96. It just goes to show that a Mid Canterbury Fete is wanted.”
The weather was just right in the morning, allowing stall holders to set up and prepare for the over 600 guests who came through the gate. Vicky Smith, our MC and entertainer for the day was joined by Treena Wernham from Christchurch, they kept everyone entertained and provided a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere.
The car park started to fill and guests were welcomed in from 10.30am by the Methven Care Trust team, “it was great to see so many familiar faces from the district and then a coach pulled up bringing a large group from Christchurch!” said team leader, Sarah Lock.
About 2.30pm the southerly gusted through the area and although most of our stalls were sheltered by the trees and buildings a couple of gazebos took a hit. One of them was the stage area, Denise said, “Vicky Smith was an absolute star, the roof ripped off and the frame collapsed, but I don’t think she missed a note and carried on singing as we sorted it all around her.”
The raffle was completely sold out and the winners were:
Terrace Downs Golf Pass for 2 plus Golf Cart – Tracey Clemens

Julie Sergeant, event co-organsier said, “We’ve had some great feedback, our stallholders and guests were generally very happy with the event, there was really constructive criticism offered which we will take on board for next year. We are very grateful to everyone for their support at this year’s fete, sponsors, stall holders, guests and our helpers. It came together so well and we are already well supported for next year.”
The winning tender for the “Truck of Lime” from Mt Hutt Lime, to be spread in Mid Canterbury by R&R Spreading will be announced next week.
Next Year’s date is already set for Wednesday 22nd November, so put it in your diary!
