Enduranz Events is counting down to their Mission Mt Somers race which is being held at Staveley on the 29th of October. To include all the family this year, they have added a 5km run.
“There are a lot of aspirant runners, many of them kids wanting to give off-road running a go, so we have introduced a 5km race” says Race Director Glen Currie. “It gives competitors an experience of running on off-road terrain and all in a safe, local environment”.
Mission Mt Somers has a marathon, half marathon, 10km and 5km race category. The 42km marathon follows the D.O.C track from Staveley in a clockwise direction, through Woolshed Creek and back past Pinnacles Hut to the finish line at Staveley. It is arguably the toughest marathon in New Zealand. Likewise the 21km half marathon starts at Woolshed Creek and follows the D.O.C track, also finishing at Staveley. Both tracks are challenging and include substantial climbs and technical downhill running.
Marathon entries have already surpassed last year’s race, and the other categories are filling up fast. “We are hoping to attract in excess of 300 entrants this year, which would be great for the district and surrounding towns” says Race Director Tineka Johnstone adding “we would like to acknowledge Experience Mid Canterbury for their support with the promotion and marketing of this year’s event”.
Enduranz Events have offered $200 cash to the first competitor within the half marathon who completes it under two hours. “Braden Currie and Phil Costley came close when the course was held under the Big Day at the Office brand, however the course was slightly longer than 21km, so it is definitely achievable” says Currie. Nathan Jones who won the 21km race last year in 2hrs 18 mins will return to try and better his time and win the trophy again.
There is also $500 cash up for grabs for the fastest open male and female runner in the marathon category thanks to local law firm Tavendale and Partners, and apparel and equipment sponsors Macpac are back on board providing heaps of awesome prizes.
