Richie Owen, synonymous with Big Al’s, having worked there since he was a young lad, has a new job with Mt Hutt. Al Gilchrist (Big Al) and his daughter Kirstie wish him all the best, saying “what a fantastic opportunity for him and for Methven, it is great to have somebody as passionate about Methven as Rich in this position at Mt Hutt.”
Kirstie went on to say, “Our bike repair service is unchanged as we are really pleased to introduce our new team member, Colin Arnst, who will be repairing all the bikes that come in.”
With 22 years experience both is sales and repairs with Avanti Cycles, Colin thought he was retiring until Big Al’s asked him to bring his expertise to Methven. He said, “I owned the Avanti store in Ashburton for many years and thought I’d said goodbye to bicycles when I sold the business but the new owners asked me to stay on in the workshop. I was surprised when Luke, Kirstie’s partner, came to see me about Big Al’s so instead of being retired I am now semi-retired.”
Colin maybe self-taught, he said, “I have a mechanical mind and it’s probably in my blood as my grandfather owned a bike shop. I enjoy constantly learning with the latest technology released by the different brands and some of the new systems are actually easier to deal with. I’m still finding my way around this store though, learning to use the computer system and where all the tools are. Having had my own workshop for 22 years, it was set up around me so I knew exactly
where every tool was.”
A keen sportsman all his life including rep hockey, rep badminton, tennis and golf, Colin has represented New Zealand in Pistol Shooting. He has now discovered the more genteel sport of fly fishing and bowls, challenging our local bowls players once in a while at tournaments and friendlies. Colin said, “I may not have lived in Methven, but I know quite a few people here so it’s great to have a catch up and a wee banter when I see them.”
Colin is a bit of a hard case, as well as doing a great job on the bikes, you’ll be in for a good story or two so come on into Big Al’s and say hello.
