The R&R company has undergone quite a few changes in the last two years, new partnership, new service, new logo and now a new location.
The move to 55 Line Road, next door to Methven Panel and Paint, is the culmination of change in direction from bulk haulage to ‘Precision Fertiliser Spreading’.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect for the Smiths when Jon Harmer approached them about buying their yards on Methven Chertsey Road, as Ron was wanting to step back from the company and semi-retire and his son Ben was coming on board with wife Lucy as half partner in the company.
“Harmers was looking for a presence in Methven, so we split the yard in two and then handed over the rest when we moved.” Said Ben. “We worked together with Jon and his team, helping each other out for those two years, we might have moved now but that great relationship will continue.”
Ron Smith, is a local man, passionate about his community and his family. A Methven Lion and recently elected member of the Methven Community Board, Ron is well known for his commitment to the community both personally and through his business. Lucy and Ben used to run a hunting business NZ Safaris, and sold that so they could be part of the family business full time. Ron, his wife Ally, Ben and Lucy all work together, and Ben and Lucy’s children, Mac aged 8 and Rosie, aged 5 love going out in the trucks.
“Our kids love coming here, they know all the staff, there is a real family atmosphere. Our despatcher, Ken Clucas and most of our drivers have been with us for years. We have seen their kids grow up and they pop in to say hello even when their parents are not here.”
So why the move from haulage to spreading? “I was thinking about where the company was going,” said Ben, “I realised that bulk haulage was saturated in this area and I looked around for a solution. There were local firms concentrating on offering just one service and they were very successful, I thought – if they can do it, so can we. Focusing our resources into fertiliser spreading meant we became very good at it and have now grown through necessity. With nine trucks we are one of the largest spreading companies on the South Island. R&R Spreading has in fact tripled their client base mostly on word of mouth recommendation, and they thank their clients for that but also their staff. “We have had tremendous feedback from our clients not only about the product service but also our customer service. Our staff take really good care of our clients and have a great rapport with them.”
All R&R Spreading trucks are fitted with the latest GPS technology capable of Variable Rate Spreading. Product goes where it needs to at the right quantity, eliminating double ups and every part of the paddock receives only the nutrients required, saving client’s money.
“We can provide consistency, and can always turn up when we say as our drivers are ready to go, they haven’t been on an overnight haul or out on another truck doing a different job.”
The new location on Line Road has also provided a great advantage for the Smiths. Humm Engineering has leased the front shed, “Guyon loves his new workshop and its great for us having an engineer on site, we support each other business within business. ”
