This year saw the best ever scarecrow trail with record numbers of trail followers taking part to find and identify the over 30 wonderful creations gracing the streets of Methven.
The weather could not have been better over the school holidays and that, along with increased social media exposure, contributed to the record breaking level of participation. The Methven iSITE staff were kept very busy indeed and estimate that over 2000 people, young and old took part in the trail this year, almost double previous years.
56 correct entries was a significant increase from last year’s 16 correct entries and a supervised draw from the correct entries selected the lucky prizewinner:
Savena Fagalima – aged 8.
As for the votes for favourite scarecrow! The prize for the best scarecrow, as voted by those who took part, is Mr Potato Head made by the Peek family at 22 Camrose Street. Top 5 certificates for popularity go to Mater and Fillmore (Methven Primary School), Puss in Boots (Methven House), Mary Poppins (Paddock Vets) and Wall-E (Rachel Pilling).
Highly commended certificates to Foghorn Leghorn (Lucy Raisbeck), Pumbaa and Timon (Rachel Cooney), Bambi (Canterbury Vets) and the ever popular Elsa (Bungard Family).
Judges’ Choice awards are given this year to acknowledge some particularly worthy creations, especially those that have been stuffed with hay or other fillings in the manner we think of as ‘scarecrow’.
The top award is to the popular Puss in Boots by Methven House and judges’ certificates also go to Rapunzel (iSITE), Tinkerbell (Glenys Williams), Merlin (BNZ), Big Foot (Hammer Hardware) and King Louie (Hannah Kidd).
A special creativity award is given to the tiny but beautiful boy fairies Bobble and Clank displayed by Sonia McCloy in McMillan Street. That creation certainly had many participants puzzled.
Methven Primary School is the recipient of the proceeds from this year’s Scarecrow Trail Maps sold by the wonderful i-SITE staff.
Photographs of all the scarecrows, with the names of the characters they represent, are posted on the Methven Scarecrow Trail Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/MethvenScarecrowTrail.
The organisers of the Scarecrow Trail, Karyn Robertson and Gillian Heald thank all those who supported and participated in this year’s event. Special thanks go to Viv Barrett and Gareth Daley Contracting for their efforts with the hay bale signs.
