The Methven area landscape – from rural farmland, braided rivers, high country lakes, conservation parks, to the foothills of the Southern Alps – provides plenty of inspiration to local and visiting artists.
The Methven Art Gallery showcases many of our talented local artists and hold regular exhibitions throughout the year that are available free of charge for locals and visitors to enjoy, including the popular Christmas Cash & Carry exhibition.
Methven based artists are constantly producing gallery works which can be spotted in local businesses and cafes around town, and the majority of local artists are available for commission projects too. Local artist Karen Smith has a studio in the town centre, and many other local artists like Cheryl Irwin have home studios that are open to the public. (Cheryl’s husband Bill Irwin is a local photographer and his stunning landscape canvases and photography books are stunning).
Methven Mall Craft & Gifts shop sell a variety of craft and giftware including knitwear, quilts, clothing, paintings, soaps, jewellery and pottery.
The Methven Summer School (held over a week in January each year) always provides a wide range of “Arty Farty” courses from landscape painting, photography, upholstery to jewellery making.
