A range of established mountain bike trails in the area ensures there is something for everyone – from beginners to advanced.

The Mt Hutt Bike Park provides over 25kms of mountain biking trails, from family friendly cross country loops to epic single tracks with technical downhill descents and jumps.

Methven Walkway

An easy track following grass verges beside private farmland and the Rangitata Diversion Race, the Methven Walkway starts/finishes at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, and is intersected by various country roads allowing several options around the outskirts of Methven, and there is an additional option to head to the Ashburton River.

Hakatere Conservation Park

An array of options are available for mountain bikers in the Hakatere Conservation Park, with most tracks being classed as grade 2 by the Department of Conservation – mostly flat with some gentle climbs on smooth track, with easily avoidable obstacles such as rocks and potholes. Options include:

  • Stour River to Lake Emily
  • Lake Emma to Lake Camp
  • Lake Clearwater circuit track
  • Potts River
  • Buicks Bridge
  • Lake Heron to Double Hut

Our uncrowded country roads with stunning views of the Canterbury foothills provide great flat riding for road cyclists, and a ride out to the Rakaia Gorge will have those legs aching the next day if you’re up for a physical and mental challenge.

If you are staying in Methven for a while, pop into Big Al’s Snowsports to find out about the Wednesday evening social bike rides that leave from their shop.

And make sure you visit the team at Mountain Gym to book in for their very popular RPM classes – their indoor spinning class is perfect for getting/keeping bike fit.

Bike Methven Jump Park

Bike Methven’s BMX jump park gives young riders an opportunity to test their skills in central Methven. The Methven Jump Park is situated on the land near the rear entrance to Methven Primary School, with access off Methven Chertsey Road beside Leap Ahead Early Childhood Centre.

Bike Events near Methven Mt Hutt

There a quite a few MTB / Cycling events around the Methven area. Below you will some information on a few events, but please make sure sure you visit our event calendar for a more detailed list of events.

  • Bike Methven hold several shuttle days at the Mt Hutt Bike Park throughout the year (where for a small fee you can be ride the trails without having to pedal all the way to the top first) and they host several major mountain bike events.
  • The Tinwald Cycling Club hold several of their Sunday Race Series events in the Methven region (open to anyone to enter) and there are plenty of road cycling and multi sport events held in the area each year.
  • Mt Hutt’s Peak to Pub in September is not just for the hard core, this race is achievable for anyone who is interested in challenging themselves physically and mentally. Complete the mountain bike section as part of a team, or tackle the whole event.
  • Take your love of mountain biking to the next level with Mt Hutt Helicopters Helibiking Shuttle Days! Be taken by helicopter to one of 3 downhill trails in the stunning Rakaia Gorge.
  • Multisportevents include a 42km MTB Race or Ride option as part of their Arrowsmith Thee Races event. Held in April each year, the event provides amazing scenery as you bike around Arrowsmith Station and Lake Heron.

Visit the team at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre or Big Al’s Snowsports for trail-maps, riding tips and information on all the local trails. And just encase you were wondering why we would recommend dropping into a snow shop for MTB information  – Big Al’s have been around bikes for a long as they have been around snowsports. They provide bike rental (full suspension x country and XC hardtrails), retail (including helmets, pumps, drink cages, car racks, and a good range of tyres and tubes), bike sales, and workshop facilities.
