Peel Forest Park Scenic Reserve

The reserve, located south of the Rangitata River, covers over 700 hectares of rich and diverse forest that provides a variety of native bush, bird-life and a series of tracks for walkers.

There are a variety of tracks from a short 30-minute walk past large forest trees, to a 2–3 hour ascent of Little Mt Peel/Huatekerekere.

The reserve can be divided into three areas: Clarke Flat & Te Wanahu Flat (both accessed from Coopers Creek Peel Forest Road) and Blandswood (accessed from Blandswood Road).

Walking & Hiking Tracks accessed via Clarke Flat

  • Kahikatea Walk – Walking Track: 1 hour return, 1.9 km
  • Acland Falls – Walking Track: 30 minutes each way

Walking & Hiking Tracks accessed via Te Wanahu

  • Fern Walk – Walking Track: 1 hour 30 minutes each way, 3.3 km
  • Big Tree Walk – Short Walk: 15 minutes each walk
  • Allans Track – Tramping Track: 2-3 hours return via Fern Walk
  • Acland Falls Track – Walking Track: 25 minutes each way

Walking & Hiking Tracks accessed via Blandswood

  • Dennistoun Bush – Walking Track: 1 hour return, 1.8 km
  • Emily Falls – Walking Track: 45 minutes each way, 1.6 km
  • Rata Falls – Walking Track: 1 hour each way, 1.5 km
  • Little Mt Peel (via Deer Sour) – Tramping Track: 2 to 3 hours each way, 4.6 km
  • South Ridge Track – Tramping Track: 3 hours 30 minutes each way, 3.5 km

Peel Forest Park Scenic Reserve Information & Map

  • Facilities: Parking, shelter, picnic area and public toilets are available at the access point to Clarke Flat/Te Wanahu Flat. Parking is available at Blandswood. Peel Forest Campground has powered and unpowered sites, with kitchen/laundry/shower facilities.

  • Please note: Dogs are not permitted. Hunting blocks are available. Peel Forest is a varied environment, with weather conditions becoming more extreme as you climb out of the forested areas onto the open tops.
