Sharplin Falls - Walking & Hiking Trails - Methven Mt Hutt Guide NZ

Sharplin Falls

As well as being a popular picnic spot, Sharplin Falls car park is one of the starting points for the Mt Somers Track which provides a number of day walks and multi-day tramps.

Closure of Sharplin Falls Track - DOC - Methven Mt Hutt Guide NZSharplin Falls Track

The Sharplin Falls Track has been closed since February 2015 due to a rock fall which destroyed part of the gantry structure. Due to this damage and the ongoing rock fall hazard the track remains closed.

The Track has been closed from the Mt Somers Track junction. From the Sharplin Falls car park you can still cross the Bowyers Stream footbridge and head along the track up until this junction.

Mt Somers/Te kiekie summit

The summit (1687 m) and its surrounding plateau is worthy of a visit, with 360 degree views of the surrounding mountains and coastal plain. From Sharplin Falls car park it is a 5-hour one-way trip to the summit (4.7 km). NOTE: In winter this face gets very little sunlight making the snow hard and icy. An ice axe, crampons and mountaineering experience are required to reach the summit.
