Organised by Liz McMillan, the fundraising breakfast on Wednesday 13th April, attracted people from the Ashburton District and beyond who all contributed towards the $450 raised.
Two guest speakers were invited to the event, Gail from Mid-South Island Women’s Refuge & Family Safety Services who shared the difficulties faced by the organisation to provide their range of services. The number of women coming through their doors and needing their help is far higher than the number funded for by the government. Gail expressed her gratitude to Liz and the attendees for the funds raised at the breakfast.
Chanelle O’Sullivan followed and spoke about her role with the Facebook group Farming Mums NZ. The group provides a safe place for discussion and support to Mum’s for all aspects of life. Where the situation arises, support form other agencies such as Rural Women are sought and gratefully received. Chanelle shared her reasons for being a part of the Farming Mums group, some of the fun and also tragic stories that have happened and what she has learned personally from the experience. Her speech was interesting, inspiring, and along with the serious side of life, she entertained us with her humorous insights.
Liz would like to thank the guest speakers, Gail and Chanelle and everyone for attending the fundraising breakfast, especially those who travelled up from Ashburton. Special thanks to Chrissy and her team at Southern Cross for the delicious breakfast and Emmily Harmer photography who donated a glam photo session.
Also to Kelly from Supervalue who donated sanitary items to the Women’s Refuge and to Safer Ashburton for their help in selling tickets.
